Mary Focazio knew his cell phone calls were costing him a lot, but it was still a bit of a shock when he did the math and learned just how much it was per minute.

Using a spreadsheet to tally up the total monthly charges including taxes for all his voice minutes and text messages, he discovered he was paying as much as 42 cents each for his 400 to 500 minutes a month.  Not exactly what the provider had touted.

"You see the ad says $59 a month, but then you add it up and you realize… my phone bill is $120 a month!" and sometimes much higher, said Focazio, of Upper Black Eddy, Pa. 

So he did the budgeting equivalent of dialing 911.  He turned in his smartphone and got a prepaid model fromTracFone without all the bells and whistles.  Now he has spent $160 total on  it in the five months since. 

"It’s nice to just have an extra 50 or 100 bucks a month," said Focazio, 44, a strategist at a digital media agency in New York.  

Prepaid phones, which provide a set number of minutes, are becoming a more appealing financial option as careful household budgeting becomes paramount in a tight economy.  

Cell phone users who switch to them can cut their monthly spending significantly - particularly those who talk 300 minutes or less a month, says the Telecommunications Research and Action Center.  

That,  of course, is precisely why service providers prefer long-term contracts instead.  Most don’t advertise prepaid plans widely instead targeting them largely at  low-income users.  But all major carriers offer prepaid phone plans.  

The number of US prepaid wireless subscribers is estimated to have grown by 19 percent as the economy slowed last year, a climb of nearly 8 million to 49.5 million.  This year the number of users is expected to rise another 13 percent compaired with just 3 percent for contract subscribers, according to the Yankee Group, a Boston based research firm.

"Certainly with the economy being what it is, prepaid is resonanating even more." said Jayne Wallace, spokeswoman for Virgin Mobile USA, which sells its prepaid phones in outlets like Walmart and Target stores and drug store chains.  "Prepaid is now a viable option for more people"

Many people wrongly assume that switching to prepaid would always incur expensive termination fees on their exising contract, the group said.  Others figure they’d have to change cell-phone numbers, which isn’t generally the case.

The basics on prepaid plans are this:  You buy a phone for anywhere from $10 to $200 and then pay for use in advance, based on the carrier’s specified rates for each  minute of talk or text message.  You can replenish your minutes when you run low or wait till the phone goes dead when  they’re used up.

Plan options differ.  While the snazziest phones such as Apple’s IPhone generally arent’ available under prepiad, you can still find models that take pictures, play music, offer email or provide Web access if you’re willing to pay a higher initial cost.

Consumer Reports said in it’s January issue that a family with two cell phones that talks 700 minutes per month could save $100 to $220 a year buying per-minute packs from Virgin Mobile as oppposeed to large carrier’s contract family plans.  And for really incessant talkers, Virgin’s $80 prepaid unlimited plan will save them $240 a year compared with unlimited contract plans from the major carriers.

In a previous post about the upcoming iPhone 3G i say that it will come in 60 days but this is just a rumor and several web site speak about that. However, not until Steve Jobs pulls out the next-gen iPhone from his pocket at his keynote at Apple’s June World Wide Developers Conference will we really know what’s new for the Apple’s next iPhone.

3G iPhone: it will be equipped with the ‘SGOLD3″ chipset made by Infineon that supports 3.5G - doubling current iPhone mobile data rates of to 7.2MBps. reference to that was found in the apple software version 2.0.

Capacity & Iphone Price: 32GB 599$ , 16GB 499$, and perhaps 8GB 399$.

Dimension: the new 3G iPhone will be slimmed down 2.5 millimeters .

Camera: the iPhone 3G will have a 5 megapixel camera.

Push Email: the next generation iPhone will support Microsoft’s business e-mail server software Microsoft Exchange and a ‘push’ email functionality similar to BlackBerry.

Software: contact search, meeting invitations, and an advanced calculator.

Nike iPhone : Stuff.tv is kicking back in Nike’s HQ at the moment and claims to have official word about Nike’s future plans with Apple. They say that the Nike+ system will ‘definitely’ extend beyond the iPod nano to support the relatively bulky iPhone and iPod touch.

GPS iPhone: According to iPhone Hellas: ’secret’ documents reveal the next iPhone will have built in support for Bluetooth headsets and possibly even GPS navigation.

Some of this are just rumor and other are confirmed so keep an eye on my iPhone 3G articles series, i’ll keep you informed.

Apple Unveils New Iphone 3g With Gps and a Lower Price

Next generation iPhone will include faster internet access, satellite navigation - and a drastic drop in price.  The next generation iPhone will include faster internet access, satellite navigation ? and a drastic drop in price.

Speaking on stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference Steve Jobs, the chief executive of iPod maker Apple, unveiled the new iPhone 3G ? a cheaper, more powerful replacement for the handset launched a year ago.

Internet speculation had been rife about the new features that might be included on the high-end touchscreen handset, but in the end some of the rumors ? such as built-in video calling - proved wide of the mark.

As reported in the Guardian, the new model will include GPS satellite navigation as well as faster 3G internet connection and a suite of software improvements.

But the biggest news was the sharp drop in the headline price of the phone itself. The iPhone 3G will cost just $199 (?100) ? half the current $399 retail price in US shops.

The iPhone currently costs ?269 in the UK, and although an Apple spokeswoman said British prices would be announced at a later date, it is understood that the phone is likely to be available for a variety of different prices depending on which tariff customers sign up to.

"We did figure out what our next challenges are ? the next mountain we have to climb," said Jobs at the end of a two-hour event in San Francisco. "The number one reason people didn’t buy the iPhone was that they couldn’t afford it, so we need to make the iPhone more affordable."

The news was welcomed by industry observers, who are keen for the gadget to fulfil the hype generated over the past 18 months. But the changes reveal some of the difficulties that Apple ? which has been flying high for the best part of a decade on the success of its iPod music player ? has found with moving into the phone industry.

All in all, I still have to say that I too doubt that Apple will release a low-cost iPhone, especially if it would mean downgrading features. My doubt does not come from Apple’s quality-first reputation, but more from their tending.

Update: Apple has announced that the new apple iphone version 2 will be sold for $199.

This is great news for those of you who are making plans to buy an iPhone. Customers can even activate their iPhone from home by logging into iTunes and following the instructions. Sounds pretty easy to me.
